We were all children once

Life moves around me
Sharp frequencies and soft waves.
Warm morning sunlight
Slides across each solemn face.
It comes as a surprise
That I don’t feel so alone,
Morning routines intercept
And strangers become known.

I keep seeing the man who works in the comic book shop,
The corporate couple who get off the tram at the hospital,

Look out the window,
See that man in his car?
He’s waiting for the lights to turn green
Just like the rest of us are.

When we met you told me
Of your childhood and how I
Remind you of the fairies
You chased when you were five.
Run down to the bottom of the garden,
My love, your friends await.
Sometimes sunlight slides
Across your smiling face

And I catch a glimpse of the boy you were for a moment,
Before you return to me as the man you’ve grown to be.

I would have joined your search,
Would’ve sought out the magic with you,
I look after you now and wish
I could’ve looked after you then too.

Life moves around me
Sharp frequencies and soft waves.
Sometimes all I can focus on
Is what’s right in front of my face.
We commute, we cook, we clean,
We kiss and I think of how
We were all children once,
And it ties us together now.
